Do you have unwanted Christmas gifts?

With Christmas now over many of us are left cleaning up the house, polishing off the last of the turkey, and trying to find a place to stuff a variety of unwanted gifts that we have received. Many of us get an array of gifts each year that we do not really need and will never use, and in many cases they simply fester in a deep, dark corner of the house for years and finally get disposed of. However, there are far more useful things that you can do with your unwanted gifts, which could help you to earn money, save you money, or enable you to help out a worthy cause.

You could sell your unwanted gifts on the Internet on sites such as eBay. Remember, one man’s junk is another man’s treasure, so just because you don’t want the item don’t assume that nobody else will want it. In fact, many people make a small fortune each year by selling their unwanted gifts online, and no matter what you sell them for you will still be better off than if you simply left them lying around the house gathering dust. Selling on your unwanted gifts is a good way to make some money after the expense of Christmas, and will prove particularly useful in the current financial climate where many of us need to get some extra cash together.

Another option is to set up a cupboard or drawer and put all of your unwanted gifts in there. Most of us get an abundance of booze and chocolates over the , so you can also put any surplus supplies of these in to your ‘unwanted presents’ cupboard.

You can then use the items from this cupboard to give as gifts when birthdays and other special occasions come around, and this can save you the money and hassle of having to keep going out and buying presents over the course of the year for various birthdays and other occasions. Just remember not to give the gift back to the same person that gave it to you, as they could end up taking offence!

If you want to raise money for a worthy and have a little fun you can carry out a raffle or auction with friends and family or at work. If you and your friends all get together and pool your unwanted gifts you can then sell raffle tickets to others, such as people at work, and get rid of your unwanted items whilst making money for your favourite charity. You can have great fun by arranging an auction at work with all of the unwanted gifts, where others can bid on each gifts, and this can help you to raise a fair amount of cash for a very worthy cause.

If you have received unwanted presents such as clothes or electrical items, and you know where the item was purchased from, you can try returning the item to the retailer. Of course, if you do not have a receipt then it is unlikely that you will get a refund on the item. However, many shops will consider giving you some form of credit note for the item, which you can spend at the same shop at a later date. Alternatively you can ask to exchange the item for another one that you will use.
