Sort your budget out for 2010

Like many other people you may have experienced a great many difficulties in terms of your finances this year, and this is partly because many of us were not prepared for the onslaught of financial problems that were set to hit us, ranging from the recession and job losses through to increasingly difficult credit conditions. However, the last year should have taught most of us some valuable lessons in terms of finances, and one thing that many people will be planning to do for 2010 is try and sort out their finances.

If you want to try and enjoy a slightly less stressful time with your finances this year it is important that you budget carefully and do your best to streamline your finances as much as possible. The start of the year is a great time to do this, as you can then look forward to the rest of the year without the worry of struggling with your finances month in month out. It isn’t always an easy task to get your budgeting right, but if you put aside just a few hours you will be surprised at how much you can achieve.

One of the things that you should do is go through your outgoings carefully and see where you can make cutbacks. This could include things such as cutting out luxuries that you cannot really afford, getting rid of subscriptions and memberships that you may not really use, such as magazines and gym memberships, and most importantly seeing where you can save money by switching providers or services. You will be surprised at how much you can save each month by switching services such as insurance, utilities, broadband, and the like and finding a cheaper package or provider. This is something that you can do with ease these days as there are many comparison sites in operation that will enable you to quickly and easily see where you can get the best deal.

Another thing you need to look at is your debt levels. If you have a wide range of difference unsecured debts with a number of lenders, such as loans, store cards, credit cards, etc. then you may be paying more interest than you need to and you may be paying out more each month than you have to. You should consider whether consolidation of these various debts could help you to save money each month on your outgoings and save you interest overall on your debts. In addition to this consolidation could mean that you only have to deal with one repayment and one creditor rather than a variety, making it easier to manage your accounts.

If you do not already have access to an online bank account then this is something else you may want to consider as part of your budget changes. Managing your bank account and day to day transactions can be far easier and quicker if you have an online bank account, and you can also keep track of your account far more easily as you have access to it at anytime of the day or night without the worry of having to wait for the branch or call centre to open.
