According to a recent report there was in increase in the number of jobless people in the UK towards the end of last year, and the rise in the number of unemployed is expected to continue this year. The number of jobless in the UK soared towards the two million mark towards the end of last year according to recent figures, and it is expected to rise again over the coming weeks when more up to date data is released, with a good chance that the number could actually smash through the two million barrier.

In a recent statement, Tony McNulty, the Employment Minister, said: ‘The Government is doing all it can to ensure economic stability for businesses, homeowners and jobseekers. Our message to job seekers is clear – we won’t give up on you but you mustn’t give up on looking for work.’

The Shadow Work and Pensions Secretary, Theresa May, stated: ‘Gordon Brown’s complete failure to prepare Britain for recession means that the UK now faces the highest rise in unemployment in any G7 country. Labour’s astonishing claim this morning that there is light at the end of the tunnel shows how out of touch they are.’

There was a rise of around 131,000 people without a job in the three months to November, according to recently released figures, and this brought the number of unemployed up to around 1.92 million.

However, as a result of an increase in job losses over the festive season and since the New Year, this figure is expected to rise. Job losses have occurred in a variety of different sectors, including the financial sector, retail, estate agencies, and a number of other areas that have been affected by the credit crunch and the recession.
