Save money by cutting insurance costs

As most of us know the recession is underway, and with finances already very tight for most this has resulted in the financial situations of many households going from bad to worse.

The combination of the recession and the ongoing effects of the global credit crunch have made it more important for people to trim their costs and make cutbacks wherever possible. Whilst it may seem as though there is little that you can do to cut back on your outgoings there are certain ways in which you could reduce the amount that you spend to help you to get by more easily in these difficult times.

Reviewing your insurance policies can be a good way to save a little money. You may think that the savings that you make on various types of insurance cover are too small to be worth bothering about, and every year many people fail to compare prices on cover because they think this way. However, if you have a variety of different types of insurance cover, such as home insurance, pet insurance, car insurance, and the like, and you are able to save just a few pounds a month on each of these this can amount to over £100 a year in your bank instead of in some fat cat’s pocket!

One couple decided to switch their home insurance cover provider recently, and were amazed to find that they could get almost the same level of cover with a different provider to their existing one for over £300 less, which has given them far more money in their pocket. They said that the saving was a real surprise, and stated: ‘We’ll put the saving towards helping with other household bills. It is so welcome in these difficult times.’

However, there is also good news for those that want to save money on their insurance cover but do not want to switch insurance provider for whatever reason. In some cases insurance firms will drop the price of your premiums if you show that you are able to get the same level of cover elsewhere for less money. In this highly competitive field insurance firms have to be flexible in this way, and this is something that is worth remembering.

One insurance industry official said: ‘We value loyalty and will always prefer a customer to stay with us. Our advisers have discretion to offer some discounts so we’d urge customers to give us a call before switching.’

So, if you want to remain loyal to your insurance provider but you don’t want to pay through the nose for your loyalty you should give your insurance provider a call, as this could save you some money on your cover with just one simple phone call.

If you do plan to switch to another provider make sure that you take the time to compare, and remember that whilst price comparison can be very useful you should not rely on them solely, as some providers do not offer cover through these sites.
