Do’s and Don’ts of Travel Insurance

Travel insurance is bought by many types of people in different industries. Because travel insurance has more rules and regulations than home or car insurance policies, there are many facts that need to be considered before purchasing travel insurance.

The first step before purchasing travel insurance is to speak with the insurance company and ask questions.

  • If a traveller has an illness where care could be needed while on vacation, does the policy cover this treatment?
  • What if an adventurous couple want to mountain climb, is this activity covered under the policy?
  • What age does the travel insurance policy cover?
  • What is the limit on claims when travelling?
  • Are there certain places to travel where the insurance policy is not valid?
  • Is the coverage more expensive for holiday travel and is holiday travel covered under the normal policy?

All and more of these questions should be included in your shopping process before signing any policy for travel.

If you are planning to travel within Europe in 2005, for a travel insurance policy to be accepted, a new E111 form must be with each individual at all times. This allows the traveller to free or less expensive medical care if needed. To apply for the new form, see the nearest Post Office.

Some of the policy options for travel insurance can be bought as a yearly policy or a single trip policy. The yearly option allows travel all throughout the year for periods of 30 to 60 days away at a time. With this policy, questions should be asked about activity coverage and minimum number of days you must be away to be covered. The one trip policy can be expensive, and findings show if two vacations are taken a year, for the price, the yearly policy is a better deal for the money. With both policies, find out if the time of year or place of travel is covered.

Family or couple insurance tends to be lower than insuring each individual separately. Also, if travelling with older people, check the rate for each individual as well as the coverage. As with any insurance, age does play a vital role in determining the premium.

Shopping around for travel insurance can be done on the Internet as well. The main points when searching for a policy are destination, time period of travel, age, activities, medical coverage, and personal possession coverage. Always check before buying travel insurance, taking some time to shop around can save on the premium.
