Making Sure You Get The Cheapest Pet Insurance Available

With recent changes in veterinary treatment and technology, it is now very possible to incur veterinary bills in the thousands of pounds. If, therefore, you are thinking of taking out pet insurance to cover and illness or accident that your pet may suffer, this may not only be one of the wisest decisions you make on behalf of your pet, but could also be one of the most financially astute decisions you make.

Nevertheless, just because you have made the decision to insure your pet, this does not mean you necessarily have to break the bank. It is eminently possible to obtain cheap pet insurance – you just need to know what to look for.

Types of pet insurance cover

When considering the financial cost of pet insurance, the first thing you need to decide is the type of insurance you want. Essentially UK insurance companies offer two main types of pet insurance – straight accident insurance, and accident and illness insurance. In car insurance terminology the former would be equivalent to third party insurance, while the later would be akin to fully comprehensive. In other words, with the first you get the bare minimum, whereas with the second you get the Royal treatment.

Excess

Having decided upon the type of pet insurance you want/need, you then need to decide how much of an excess you want to have in place. If you were not already aware of it, the excess is the sum you are required to pay before you can claim against your insurance provider – say the first £ 100. Obviously the higher you set the excess, the lower you should expect the premium to be, as there is more chance you’ll end up paying for all vet fees. Conversely, set the excess too low and the premium could be set high as your insurance provider will end up paying for all the vet’s fees. A balance between these two sums would be ideal – but may take some research.

Online

The third stage in making sure you get the cheapest available pet insurance is to look up some quotes on the Internet. As pet insurance premiums are generally set by the age and type of animal being insured, it is both more convenient and quicker to get quotes online. Also, as the insurance provider’s costs are lower, the premium should be lower than if you traipse around in the ‘real world’ looking for pet insurance providers.

Shop around

Finally, even when you think the first quote you get for your pet insurance is reasonable, you should still spend some time shopping around and making sure you cannot get the deal cheaper elsewhere. Keep in mind that you are in the virtual world, so you arte not really going anywhere. As such, you have more physical time to haggle the insurance provider to providing you with an introductory discount or something else that can be consider a benefit for selecting their insurance company over anyone else’s.
