How younger drivers can save money on their car insurance cover
For many years younger drivers have been penalised because of their age and inexperience when it comes to getting car insurance, and for many younger drivers the cost of cover can be crippling. In fact, some younger drivers are unable to afford to get a car, not because of the cost of the actual vehicle but because of the added cost of the insurance cover. Although insurance cover for younger drivers does tend to be more expensive, this takes into account the higher risk of accidents as well the driver’s lack of experienced.
It is important to remember that whilst car insurance for younger, inexperienced drivers is expensive compared to the rest of the car insurance market, there are ways in which you can reduce the cost of cover, and taking some simple steps and being mindful of the factors that can affect the cost of cover you can help to keep costs down as much as possible.
There are a number of different factors that can affect the cost of your car insurance cover, and some of these things you can do something about whereas there is nothing that you can do about others. Amongst the factors that may affect the cost of your cover are your age, how long you have held a full license, where you live, what your job is, where the car is parked, whether the car is alarmed, what sort of car and engine size you have, whether you have had any past claims or convictions, the level of cover that you go for, and the insurance provider that you choose.
As with any type of insurance cover it is vital that you take the time to compare quotes from a number of providers, as the cost of cover even for younger drivers can vary considerably from one provider to another. You should aim to get at least three quotes in order to make sure that you increase your chances of getting a more competitive quote – with prices the way they are for younger drivers the more money you can save the better.
You should also consider the high cost of cover when you are getting a car, and bear in mind that if you cannot go without the alloys, sporty design, and large engine size then you are going to have to pay the price. However, it is also worth remembering that if you go for a very old, cheap car that may have safety issues you may also be penalised in terms of the amount of insurance that you have to pay, as some insurance companies also class this as an increased risk of accidents.
It is best to opt for a basic car with a smaller engine size, but one that is not to old and battered and has been well maintained (you will have to pay a little more but you will probably save this and more besides in terms of money you would have spent on repairs on a much older car and higher insurance costs).
Make sure that you get your car alarmed and secured, and wherever possible park it in a garage or on a driveway. It is also worth considering taking the advanced Pass Plus test, which could further help to reduce the cost of insurance by a considerable amount for younger drivers.
