When it comes to credit cards consumers can look forward to a wide range of benefits, ranging from interest free credit and total convenience to flexible repayments and even a choice of rewards with some cards. However, there are also pitfalls to watch out for with credit cards, and one major concern for many people is the risk of credit card fraud. Although security relating to credit card use has become more sophisticated over recent years, the various credit card scams in operation in the UK have also become increasingly advanced, and as a result many people find themselves the victims of credit card fraud.

Credit card fraud can be a very traumatic experience for those that become victims, and can result in stress, depression, and of course financial losses in some instances. Even when the money can be claimed back the experience is one that can have a profound adverse effect upon you. Although you cannot do anything that will guarantee that you will not become the victim of credit card fraud there are certain steps that you can take that could reduce the risks of this happening:

  • Always sign your new credit cards on the signature strip right away so that in the event of loss your signature is on the card
  • Do not write down your pin number anywhere obvious – or anywhere at all if possible
  • Always destroy old cards properly by cutting them up
  • Always shred information relating to your credit card account, such as statements and letters
  • Avoid faxing your credit card details as you never know who will get them at the other end or how long the fax will be left lying around before it is picked up by the intended recipient
  • Do no give out your credit card details to anyone that calls you and asks for them claiming to be from a company
  • Do not provide your credit card details online or via email other than through a secured site that you have logged into yourself (not from an email link)
  • Always check your credit card statements carefully and keep an eye out for any suspicious transactions or usage
  • Always keep your credit card safe to minimize on the risk of loss
  • If you do lose your credit card make sure that you inform the card issuer right away so that the card can be cancelled before it falls into the wrong hands.
