An industry expert has said that with the summer holidays coming up, and many Brits planning to head abroad and use their credit cards, consumers need to ensure that they use their common sense when it comes to using their credit cards whilst abroad.

Officials from the UK Cards Association have said that consumers need to make sure that they are aware of the various charges that credit card companies apply when credit cards are used abroad, and that they need to exercise “common sense precautions” when using their cards to avoid unnecessary charges and decrease the risk of fraud.

One official from the group said that it was important to take extra care when taking a credit card abroad, as against Brits abroad is prevalent at present and those that fall victim to this type of fraud can have their holiday ruined as a result.

In order to avoid inconvenience and hassle whilst trying to enjoy a relaxing holiday consumers need to be extra vigilant when it comes to using their credit cards abroad, and need to make sure that they are careful with their credit card details.

The official stated: “Only take cards with you that you intend to use and leave any others in a secure place at home. When you are overseas, never let your card out of your sight and never tell anyone your pin number.”

He also added that it was important to check on the fees and charges that credit card providers apply, as these can be quite high when the credit card is used abroad.

He stated: “It is always worth checking with your card company or looking at their website to see which of these fees are applicable to your cards. As a rule of thumb, you are going to be better off using your credit card for purchases – especially those over £100 – and taking cash out of cash machines with your debit card.”
