With unemployment levels rising in the UK, and many people finding themselves with a sudden loss of income in what has become a very difficult financial climate, it has been reported that even the most menial of positions are now attracting job applications in the hundreds from desperate people that will take any job in order to get an income. One job for a binman recently attracted nearly two hundred and forty applications from unemployed people desperate to start earning money again.
Officials claim that many low skill jobs are now attracting an average of one hundred applicants each, as competition heats up and the rising number of unemployed fight for the falling number of job vacancies that are being advertised.
Officials have said that employers are now finding that they can be far more selective about who they pick, as the number of applications has soared, and unemployed people are being forced to apply for jobs that may mean far lower wages and far worse conditions that they previously had because of the shortage of vacancies.
Over the past year employers are said to have cut the number of jobs that they are advertising by 50 percent, whilst at the same time the number of people fighting for each position has soared.
The number of job losses announced in the UK in the first quarter of this year is said to be the highest in Europe, and job losses have soared to their highest level since Labour came into power twelve years ago.
Earlier this year a study was carried out showing that around ten people were chasing every job on average, but this has now increased to sixteen people chasing every job. One jobs website said that in March last year it had around 85,000 people registering for job updates, but this had increased to 124,000 in March of this year.
