Gas bills set to rocket
According to a recent warning from energyhelpline.com gas bills are set to soar over the coming months for UK families, with annual bills set to rocket from an average of £600 a year to £1000 a year. Gas and electricity prices soared earlier this year after wholesale energy prices went up, so families have already been hit hard by energy bill hikes, in addition to rises in the cost of food, petrol, and other bills such as water and council tax. However, officials warn that things are set to get much worse.
Officials state that the cost of wholesale energy has soared again, and this means that there will be further dramatic rises in the cost of energy bills for UK households, which will further impact upon already strained household finances.
One official from energyhelpline.com said: ‘If this year’s rises weren’t bad enough, gas prices are set to get much, much worse. Wholesale gas prices are double what they were this time last January. We all know this will have a gigantic impact and if these increases are passed to the consumer in their entirety, the UK could be facing a whopping 64% rise in gas prices.’
Figures show that in 2002 the average gas bill was around £320. However, over the course of this year the average gas bill is set to rocket to £1091, and this is the first time that the average annual gas bill will have broken through the £1000 barrier. Energy firms are expected to pass on the price hikes in the autumn. The cost of electricity is also set to rise by next year, with officials predicting that the average bills will rise from £1050 to £1500. In 2005 the average electricity bill was just £662.
