A new guide has been developed to help consumers learn more about using their credit cards abroad more effectively and sensibly.
The new guide is called the Using Your Card Overseas guide, and offers valuable advice on how best to use your card abroad and what you should and shouldn’t do, with the aim being to help consumers avoid pitfalls such as costly fees and charges as well as credit card crime.
The guide has been developed by the payment clearance agency, APACs. An official from the firm stated: ‘Using your debit or credit card is a convenient and safe way to pay when you’re overseas. However, everyone should be aware that there may be fees or costs connected with using your card in a foreign cash machine or shop. Additionally, card criminals often look to catch us with our defences down when we are on holiday, so we need to take some simple, sensible precautions to help minimise the chances of becoming a victim of fraud.’
She also added: ‘The Using Your Card Overseas guide provides useful advice when it comes to using your card abroad, and can help ensure that you’re not caught out by any surprising charges and that your trip overseas is free from fraud.’
This comes as recently released figures show how credit card use abroad has increased amongst Brits, with plastic cards being used around ten times per second abroad for purchases last year. This reflected a 10 percent increase on card usage abroad compared to the previous year.
Last year there were around 317 million transactions made abroad on plastic cards by Brits, coming to a value of nearly £28 billion.
