Have a UK Holiday and Save Money
With the reduction in the value of the pound against foreign currencies, many people in the UK are rethinking their holiday plans for this summer. It promises to be a hot one, if the weather predictions prove to be correct, and most people will want to visit beach areas, of which there are plenty right here at home.
One deterrent to holidaying in the UK, though, in spite of the low exchange rate on the pound is that the cost of accommodations is likely to be very high this year due to lost revenue caused by the recession. There are tips you can use to help you get the best holiday at home without having to spend a lot of money in the process.
One UK family, Karina and Simon Burns, have decided to scale back their holiday plans with their two young children. Instead of traveling to the Continent this summer, they plan to rent a cottage on the Devon coastline for a week. They are using the popular book Let’s Go with the Children in helping them plan their holiday. This book provides an extensive list of parks, gardens and attractions that have low or no admission fees. In this way, their only costs are the petrol and the cost of the cottage.
The website letsgowiththechildren.co.uk is a valuable resource for families with children looking for low cost ideas to give every member of the family an enjoyable holiday. You can search by region or attractions on this site which lists about 90,000 attractions that would be of interest to families. Karina says that they have been using this guide for the past few years in helping them find day trips and this year it has been invaluable to them in finding ways to keep the children entertained in Devon. She adds, “It is also good to have a mix of indoor and outdoor activities because of the unpredictable nature of the British weather.”
The head of research for Which? Holiday, Rochelle Turner, says that fewer people can afford to use their credit cards this year to help pay the cost of their holiday.
“Families are looking to save wherever they can, but particularly when it comes to luxuries like holidays,” she says.
“For those holidaying in Britain and taking public transport, booking early will usually save money. The sooner you can book train or coach tickets, the cheaper the fare. Travelling outside peak times should also cut costs. Shop around on accommodation prices, think about house swaps with friends and family and try to haggle with hoteliers, for example, to drive down the cost.”
According to the National Trust there are already signs that there is a resurgence in the interest of attractions at home with visits to UK attractions up by more than 38% since March over the same period last year.
