Over recent years the insurance industry has been battling to try and combat the financial damage that has been caused by uninsured drivers, and many insurance giants and the insurance industry as a whole have been fighting to crack down on uninsured drivers.
Recently released data has shown that the measures taken by the insurance industry to try and crack down in this department could be working to some extent, with the cost of damage caused by uninsured drivers having fallen.
According to industry reports the cost of damages and accidents that were caused by drivers that had no insurance cover on their vehicle has fallen this year, but unfortunately it is not all good news.
It is estimated that despite this fall in the cost of damage, honest drivers will still pay millions of pounds extra collectively this year to cover the cost of damage caused by uninsured drivers.
It is thought that honest driver will pay up to £407 million this year in all to fund the bureau that provides compensation for accidents that are caused by drivers that have no cover or drivers that cannot be traced.
An official from the Motor Insurers Bureau said: ‘This is the first time the cost of uninsured losses has come down year on year.’
He added: ‘We estimate we have got rid of about 15% of uninsured drivers, but there are still up to two million cars being driven illegally without insurance.’
Another insurance industry official said: ‘We know uninsured drivers are more likely to have a crash and more likely to be involved in drink driving.’
In the meantime the insurance industry plans to continue clamping down on uninsured drivers, and will be fighting to reduce the level of damages caused by these drivers even further.
