Warning issued over HMRC message
Over the past couple of weeks authorities have had to issue warnings over a new email scam that was doing the rounds claiming to be from Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs.
One of a series of emails that claimed to be from HMRC the latest scam email suggested to recipients that they could be in line for a payout from HMRC. However, authorities have confirmed recently that the email was not an official one and consumers have been urged to ignore it.
In the email recipients are told that they have been approved by HMRC to receive money, and according to reports this is one of a number of scams that have been in circulation lately.
It is thought that scams such as this result in losses of around £3.5 billion every year in the UK, with over three million people each year being caught out by scams every year according to the Office of Fair Trading.
Part of the latest scam HMRC email reads: “Due to the security, we ask that you keep all information confidential until your claim will be processed and your money remitted to you.”
Recipients are then asked to complete a form that is attached, and this includes the provision of personal information from the recipient.
