Supermarkets cut fuel prices

Consumers in the UK have been hit with soaring petrol prices over recent months, with the cost of oil per barrel rocketing and higher petrol costs putting additional strain on already struggling household finances. Households have also had to cope with increased food prices, higher borrowing costs, and hiked up bills, all of which have left many unable to stretch their month budgets as far as they need to.

However, there has now been some good news for drivers, as earlier this week a number of major supermarket chains reduced the price of petrol per litre, which means that drivers who fill up often will be able to cut the cost of their fuel bills. Tescos, Morrison’s, and Asda are amongst the supermarkets that have cut the cost of petrol. The oil company BP has said that the cost of petrol at over three hundred of its petrol stations has gone down by around 2 pence per litre on average.

Whilst the cost of oil per barrel has been soaring the price has started to come down a little, and has fallen by around 6% since its recent peak.

An official from Asda, which has cut the price of petrol by 3 pence per litre, said: “We are seeing a more stable reduction in oil prices, allowing us to pass on the savings to customers. We urge other retailers to follow our lead at a time when customers need as much help as possible.”

The AA has also urged other firms to follow the lead of the supermarkets and cut petrol prices, with one official stating: “The AA expects fuel suppliers to pass on, not pocket, the saving for the good of UK families, hauliers and the economy. Should fuel suppliers and retailers appear to be dragging their feet we will seek to expose this.”
