Everyone needs to take a holiday at least once a year so that they can de-stress and unwind so that they will be rejuvenated and ready to return to work.

However, in these uncertain times many are wondering how they can afford to take a holiday in the usual manner when they have less money to spend on such leisure pursuits. Here are some ways you can take the holiday you deserve without overspending. There are many bargains to be had if you only take a few extra minutes to search for them online.

Make a budget for how much you can afford to spend on a holiday this year whether you intend to stay at home or travel abroad. Although this is something that most people do at first, they tend to overspend because they see something they would really like to buy and then have to cutback in other ways when they return home in order to make the payments for their folly. The key is to strictly adhere to your budget and not to go over your limits. Allow the amount of money you will need to spend for each day and stick to it.

Bring a lunch or opt for eating in. Pack a hamper of sandwiches to take with you on the trip so that you won’t have to stop to eat at a restaurant. Choose self-catering accommodations so that you can bring your own food with you and cook your own meals. This will save you the added expense of eating in expensive tourist locations where the prices are usually inflated. If you stayed at home, you still have to eat so the only additional expense you will have is the cost of your travel and accommodations.

Take care when using credit cards to pay for your holiday. The interest rates charged by most credit card companies are really high and this adds to the cost of your holiday. Choose a zero percent card so that when you repay the money you spent you will not be paying away extras in interest. Do your homework on the various credit card companies and choose one that has no or very little interest attached to the repayment.

Save money by using local currency. You should either exchange your cash at your local bank before you leave on holiday when you are travelling abroad or exchange it at the airport when you arrive. However, it is better to exchange the money for local currency before you leave home. If you do use your credit card for purchases abroad, the company may charge a higher exchange rate or a fee for converting the money, which means your money doesn’t go as far as you think it does.

Look for deals in areas outside those frequented by tourists. If you go off the beaten track into places where there are not many tourists, you will likely find really great deals in the prices of food and accommodations. There are many such places with beautiful attractions where admission prices are low and the sights are spectacular. This is one way to save money and have the holiday of a lifetime for less money.
