Whilst there is still a great deal of gloomy news relating to the recession, the economy, and lack of spending on the High Street, a recent store opening in Dorset saw a massive turnout, with more than a thousand customers pouring through the doors to enjoy the opening of the flagship store.
The first fifteen minutes of the John Lewis store opening in Poole saw around thirteen hundred customers coming through the doors to see what was on offer and enjoy a little early Christmas shopping.
On the day that the Office for National Statistics said that the recession in Britain was nowhere near over the hundreds of customers queued outside the doors of John Lewis waiting for the new store to open.
This is the first John Lewis store to sell just homeware and it employs around one hundred and fifty employees, most of whom were pleasantly surprised with the massive turnout seen at the opening of the store.
A brass band and free boxes of chocolate were waiting to greet the shoppers to the new store, and the shoppers seemed to enjoy the experience even though they had to queue for an hour or more to get in.
One woman who was amongst those queuing to get into the store said: ‘The credit crunch hit us badly and we’ve been trying to save money by avoiding the shops. I’m hoping the opening of the store will herald a new era. Perhaps things will get better.’
However, like many other people that were eager to get into the new store she had plans to simply look around rather than start splashing the cash. She said: ‘Unfortunately, like most people, I don’t have much money to spare so I will just be having a nose around.’
