According to a recent report shops in the UK are aiming to offer customers with better value for money by offering smaller packaged items for a lower price rather than forcing customers to purchase unnecessarily large items for a more expensive price.
With food inflation have soared the cost of shopping has become a problem for many customers, but it is hoped that this move could help to increase affordability and make things easier for shoppers in the UK.
Tesco is one of the major supermarket brands that has been cutting back on package sizes so that it can also reduce the price of the product. An official from the supermarket said: ‘The Tesco Value chocolate digestives became an 18-biscuit pack as part of a routine range review. This happened to coincide with an increase in commodity costs.’
However, the move has not been welcomed by all, and one consumer campaign spokesperson said: ‘This smacks somewhat of deception. There is no reason why manufacturers and retailers should not be upfront about rising prices.’
An official from the British Retail Consortium said: ‘There are some instances of this occurring, but it is largely urban myth,’ says a spokesman. In real terms, food is cheaper than it has ever been.’
In the meantime shoppers are advised to look around for the best prices, with some of the discount supermarkets offering some great deals to try and increase their market share as well as increasing affordability for shoppers.
