The High Street Spanish owned bank, Abbey, has found itself in trouble after a number of customers complained about having various charges applied to their account even when they were within their credit limits. According to reports a number of customers have found different charges applied to their , ranging from a few pence to pounds, and none of the charges have been justified.

One customer said that she had noticed these charges on her account and on the accounts of various family members, and when she queries them with the bank the charges were taken off. However, she said that some people may not realise that the charges had been added and if they did not contact the bank the charges would most likely remain on the accounts, and could net the bank a small fortune in additional revenue.

The customer was sent a letter from the bank, which read: ‘There is an issue with our computer system, which is being investigated. This situation occurs when credits and debits from your account happen on the same day.’

She stated: ‘This is a real pain. Every time we get charged, we have to tell Abbey to remove it. They have promised to rectify this situation, but there has been no improvement.’

She added: ‘It can’t be that rare for someone to pay in money and take it out of their account on the same day.’ Abbey has stated that it was a computer related problem that resulted in the charges being put onto the accounts, adding that only a small number of customers had been affected, and had now been refunded.
