Tips on saving money this Christmas
After a particularly difficult year financially many families will be trying to cut back on the cost of Christmas this year, and with consumer spending levels already having fallen most retailers are well aware that they will need to take action in order to get consumer spending levels up and keep their profits up at the same time. The recent VAT cut of 2.5 percent may go a little way towards making this a more affordable Christmas, but the difference this small cut will make is negligible, and it is really up to the individual to try and take action to keep costs as low as possible.
One thing that will help to keep the cost of Christmas down is the fact that many retailers have effectively started the January sales early in the hope that this will entice consumers in and get the money rolling into the tills. This is great news for consumers, as it means that you could find yourself enjoy huge discounts of up to 75 percent in some cases on a wide range of goods from an array of different retailers. Make sure that you look out for the sales, and get there good and early to bag a bargain.
One part of ensuring that the cost of Christmas does not spiral out of control is to ensure that you set yourself a budget and then stick to it. You may have to hunt around a little longer to ensure that you stay within your budgetary limits, but the extra work will be worth it when you find that you still have some money in the bank and haven’t cleaned yourself out over the festive season. With both High Street retailers and Internet retailers offering bargains you should be able to stay within your budget with relative ease.
If you are buying larger, more expensive gifts, such as a computer, furniture, and other higher end gifts for loved ones try and negotiate a discount with the retailer. In the current financial climate, where sales are low for retailers, you will be surprised at how many will be willing to give you a reasonable discount rather than have you leaving without having purchased anything at all.
Remember to think outside the box when you are looking for Christmas gifts as well. Don’t just head straight to the shops for your presents – look at places such as eBay or in newspapers, where you often get people trying to sell their own unwanted gifts, which are still brand new and boxed up. You could save a fortune by doing this, and still get the perfect gift for Christmas.
Another way to save money is if you are buying gifts for friends and family that you will not see until after Christmas. People often exchange gifts after Christmas Day because they do not get the chance to get together before then, and if this is the case you could get those particular gifts in the sales after Christmas Day and save a small fortune on the price.
