Consumers in the UK are being warned about cutting back on their health insurance cover in order to save money, with one financial advisor claiming that the benefits of having health cover are too great to simply view this as something that can be cut back on.

The forty eight year old financial advisor said he was talking from experience, as he had suffered a heart attack and said that he did not think he could manage had it not been from the financial cover that had been provided from his two health insurance policies.

He stated: ‘The heart attack came out of the blue. ‘I had just eaten a bacon sandwich and thought the pain was indigestion, but within an hour and a half I was lying on an operating table at Leeds General Infirmary.’

He added: ‘I’m a one-man business so I dread to think what I would have done if I had not had the cover. I’ve been able to pay down a little of my mortgage with Northern Rock, get myself fit, play a little golf at my club in Shipley and return to work two or three days a week.’

Another insurance expert also commented on the importance of having the right cover in place, stating: ‘Critical illness and, in particular, income protection should almost always be a consumer’s first choice when buying protection. Suffering an illness or disability that causes you to lose your income is more likely than death before retirement age.’

Consumers do not necessarily have to spend a fortune in order to get the right cover, as there are plenty of different options available when it comes to health insurance. Users can utilise price comparison sites online to browse and compare different health insurance options and prices in order to find something that suits their needs as well as their pocket.
