Banking crisis easing according to central bank

Banks shouldn’t be given such a hard time, says Mandelson

The Business Secretary, Lord Mandelson, has recently said to colleagues that the banking industry needs to be given a break, as banks are being given a hard time at the moment. He said that whilst banks had been given a ‘well deserved bloody nose’ but that people now needed to ease up on the banks because they needed them to succeed for the sake of the economy. Read more

Compensation process begins for Icesave customers

Earlier this month there was widespread panic amongst consumers, charities, local authorities, and businesses when the Icelandic bank Landsbanki collapsed, leaving many people, firms, and agencies that had put money into high interest Icesave accounts wondering whether they had lost all of their money. The panic became worse after it was revealed that the Icelandic authorities were failing to honour obligations with regards to compensating UK consumers. Read more

Measures announced to rescue banks

The Prime Minister recently called a press conference where he not only announced a surprise 0.5% cut in interest rates a day ahead of the scheduled Monetary Policy Committee meeting, but also unveiled a package of measures aimed at rescuing the British banking system. It is thought that around £400 billion will have to be injected by the government to put the rescue plan into place, and this will come from the public purse – something that has resulted in mixed reactions from members of the public. What will happen to charity cash invested in Icelandic banks?

Following the collapse of Icelandic banks a number of charities that had money invested in these banks because of the high rates of interest being offered have come forward with concerns that they may have lost millions of pounds. The UK government has given a 100% guarantee on UK consumer savings in these banks after the Icelandic government failed to do so, but there was no indication given with regards to whether this guarantee would be given to charities and authorities with money in the banks.
