England fans need to sort out travel cover

A huge number of lucky England football fans will be looking forward to jetting off to South Africa over the coming weeks to enjoy the excitement of the World Cup, which kicks off in June. Many will already have sorted out their hotels, travel money, flights, and even itineraries.

However, many excited England fans may have forgotten about one very important element of their travel arrangements in the form of their travel insurance cover. With the possibility of things going wrong even before the trip has started, as well as the risk of something happening whilst they are away, World Cup ticket holders are being advised to ensure that they get their travel insurance sorted out sooner rather than later.

High Street retail giant Marks & Spencer, which also deals with financial products including insurance, has said that travellers heading off to South Africa for the football should ensure that they prioritise on getting travel insurance cover if they do not have any in place already.

Officials from M&S said that some travellers may find that they have to make a claim on their cover before they have even travelled, and with people having paid out huge sums of money for their trip to see the football those that do not have cover in place could end up losing out big time.

One insurance industry official said: “People get really excited about trips like this, and they spend aged getting their flights and hotels sorted out. However, many overlook the fact that they need travel insurance cover or tend to leave it till the last minute, and this can cause a real problem if a claim has to be made prior to travel.”

Credit card restrictions could increase debt for consumers

Credit card restrictions could lead to consumers taking on more expensive debt, one financial expert has claimed.

Moneywise magazine has said that consumers could be more likely to use their overdraft facility if credit cards are restricted, which could incur bank charges which would be a more expensive short term debt.

Rachel Lacey, editor of the magazine, said that credit conditions are going to be tight for the rest of the year.

“I think whether you’re a new borrower seeking a fresh sort of credit, like a new loan or a credit card, it’s going to be hard,” she continued.

The magazine also said that stricter lending criteria could come as “a bit of a shock” to a consumer culture accustomed to the idea of ’spend now, pay later’.

According to findings from uSwitch, the price comparison and switching website, almost one in four UK adults are finding debts unmanageable.

Up to 9.5 million have maxed out on one form of credit in the last six months and 38 per cent have had a credit card application rejected.

Private health insurance recovering

The number of private health insurance holders has risen for the first time in five years.

Last year, numbers rose by 1.5 per cent, taking the total close to the all-time peak of 2002.

On closer analysis, the figures actually show a drop of 2.2 per cent in the number of people taking out private cover for themselves, however a larger growth of 3.4 per cent in health schemes provided by companies cancelled this out and caused the increase.

The news has surprised many, given that in recent times NHS spending has increased and waiting lists have fallen.

Analyst Philip Blackburn at Laing and Buisson told the FT that the sector “has a sense of optimism” and that it “can look to the future with some confidence”.

Private health giant Bupa welcomed news of the increase today, with managing director Fergus Kee saying that the rise in demand “confirms the continued relevance and importance of private healthcare”.

A total of 7.4 million Britons now hold some form of private health insurance, 12 per cent of the population.
