Women fail to cover themselves for critical illness or death

For many people having critical illness insurance cover and cover is vital so that they can be certain that their loved ones are protected in the event that the worst should happen. Critical illness insurance and life cover provides peace of mind and stability for those that have the cover as well as for their loved ones, and there are many different policies available from a range of providers these days.

However, according to a recent report women in the UK do not seem to be as concerned about covering themselves with critical illness and life cover as they perhaps should be, and this has caused concern amongst some industry officials. A study that was recently carried out by leading life insurance firm Axa Life showed that many women in the UK had no life or critical illness cover in place.

According to the results of the study more than 30 percent of women did not think that they needed life insurance or critical illness cover. The figures showed that only one third of women actually had any life insurance cover in place, and when it came to critical illness cover only 20 percent of women had any cover in place.

Furthermore the results indicated that of those women that did take out life insurance cover and critical illness cover many were underinsuring themselves, which could prove to be problematic for them or their loved ones in the event of critical illness or death.

An official from Axa Life said that women had become more independent over recent years in many ways, including financially, and that they needed to be more aware of possible health problems and take steps to protect themselves financially against unexpected health problems that could seriously affect them and their families.

Consumers in debt advised to maintain important insurances

As many homeowners’ fixed-rate mortgage deals expire this year and living expenses rise, leading debt management provider EuroDebt is advising individuals to maintain their insurance policies when tightening their budgets.

More than three million home owners may be forced to make higher mortgage repayments of anywhere between £30 and £300 each month as their fixed-rate deals come to the end and a number of banks continue to up their rates.

Kevin Still, director at EuroDebt, said: “The problem is that as soon as people start falling behind on their payments they look for the easiest way out,” according to Introducer Today.

However, he advised individuals against neglecting payments on items which they do not consider a priority, such as household contents insurance, , medical insurance and critical illness and payment protection policies.

Additional financial pressures may stem from increasing living costs, including a rise in council tax charges and home fuel prices.

, head of personal finance at Fool.co.uk, commented yesterday that he believes it will be “later rather than sooner” before credit conditions improve.

‘Simple steps’ to save money on premiums

There are simple ways of reducing the money paid out on insurance premiums, an industry expert has explained.

According to LifeSearch, there are five principal steps in cutting back on unnecessary spending on life cover.

It lists these as, shopping around, switching existing insurer, acting early, quitting smoking and considering family income benefit.

LifeSearch suggests that now is an excellent time to buy , as premiums are at their lowest for several years, with the price of cover falling by over 40 per cent in the past five years.

“If you can decide which product you should have on the grounds of one factor, such as price, then websites which compare that factor must be a good thing…So if you know exactly what you want, and you are right, comparison sites and aggregators can be useful, ” said Tom Baigrie, managing director of LifeSearch.

One particularly useful piece of advice for those considering life cover could be to buy it as soon as possible, as the price goes up the older you are.

Do You Have Enough Life Insurance?

Besides the thousands of people who do not have , many that do are actually underinsured. Many have children or family members that rely on them financially, and don’t realize their coverage is less than ideal. In the event of a death, a family has enough to cope with emotionally, without the additional worry and burden of paying any mortgage and bills. If a breadwinner dies without sufficient insurance, their family might ultimately have to sell their home, at the time when they most need to be recovering from the loss. Read more

Many people unfortunately become ill at some point in their life with a sickness that turns critical and need constant treatment on a daily basis. Life insurance is a popular product but it is actually more likely that an individual will contract a “critical illness” than die. Medical treatments, either at the hospital or in home, can be very expensive to have privately, but the unnoticed cost is the loss of earnings of a breadwinner, and the incidental expense of travelling to hospitals, childcare etc. Read more

£13bn worth of uninsured clothes

February 19, 2007 by admin

We are all buying more clothes, but research from Prudential Home Insurance shows that few of us are taking the time to insure them.

Around 25 per cent of us are said to own at least £2,000 worth of clothes, while six per cent of us have a wardrobe that holds over £5,000.

In spite of the growing value of the glad rags we own, Prudential has revealed that the majority of us do not take out insurance as protection, with £13 billion worth of shoes, clothes and accessories lying around uninsured in homes across the UK.

To make matters worse, Prudential points out that now is probably not the best time to be spending so much money on clothes, as the level of UK personal debt currently exceeds £1 trillion.

“It is concerning that despite the average Brit being in £27,455 worth of debt, many are still prepared to spend so much on fashion regardless of whether they have a steady income,” said Phil Southgate from Prudential Home Insurance.

“The increasing popularity of low-cost clothing shops means that people are encouraged to spend money on a regular basis with the growing trend for disposable clothing.”

One of the most surprising figures to come from the research is that those out of employment are more likely to own more shoes than those who work, with 38 per cent of unemployed people owning between six and ten pairs.

According to Prudential however, the most alarming thing is that so few of us insure our clothes.

“It’s amazing how so many people fail to insure the contents of their wardrobes, especially considering that a fifth own up to three expensive designer items,” said Mr Southgate.

“It is important that people assess the value of their wardrobes on a regular basis.”
