RIAS: Get covered if you’re driving abroad this summer

People thinking about going on a road trip round the continent in their cars this summer need to make sure they have the right kind of cover, insurance specialist RIAS has warned.

The company has advised drivers hopping across the channel during the holidays for a scenic tour of Europe to make sure they have their paperwork in order before they go and to take their UK driving licences, vehicle registration documents and certificates of motor insurance with them.

Managing director Janet Connor said: “Getting the correct insurance in place should be as essential a part of a pre-holiday to-do list as remembering to pack your toothbrush.”

Forgetting about insurance can prove costly – getting towed home can cost more than £1,000, according to RIAS.

The news comes just after AA Ireland advised people driving to the Emerald Isle this summer to check their insurance covers them to the same level as in the UK.

Tips offered on mortgage protection

Don’t borrow more than you can afford and seek independent advice before buying are just two of the mortgage protection tips offered by industry experts, LifeSearch.

The guidance arrives as consumer confidence has been affected by the Northern Rock crisis. Interest rates are also near a six-year high at 5.5 per cent, despite coming down last week.

Matt Morris, LifeSearch policy adviser, said: “Many people consider protecting their mortgage, but they usually select a policy that will pay it for them when they can’t work.”

He added that what they actually should be protecting is their income, which not only pays the mortgage, but also pays all the other bills and the everyday cost of living.

LifeSearch also advises consumers to check employee benefits, not to buy Mortgage Payment Protection Insurance without considering Income Protection and ultimately take some form of action.

LifeSearch is a life insurance and protection specialist which was established in 1997. It currently has over 200,000 customers and more than £13 billion worth of cover arranged.

Cats of any age ’should be covered by insurance”

Cat owners have been advised that they should purchase insurance no matter how old their pet is.

Maggie Roberts, head of veterinary services for feline welfare charity Cats Protection, argues that vets’ bills can “soon mount up” and that “even the most well looked after cats can develop unexpected illnesses”.

Ms Roberts also said that having a pet undergo treatment or surgery can be emotionally draining. She said that having to worry about treatment costs can be an “added burden” for cat owners who have an ill animal.

The head of veterinary services continued that costs can be generated in a number of areas, listing that pet owners could find that their animal has to undergo surgery, hospitalisation or be referred to a specialist.

In its latest report on pet insurance in the UK, market research consultancy Defaqto found that less than one in five cats (17 per cent) in the UK are covered by pet insurance.

Bad credit doesn’t mean bad mortgage

June 1, 2007 by admin

It is something that occupies the minds of many young adults today but a leading mortgage broker claims that bad credit need not mean higher mortgage rates.

London and Country (L&C) claims that 71 per cent of people with credit problems who have visited them have walked away with a mainstream mortgage deal.

This is despite the borrower’s belief that he or she will be hit hard for a previous bad record.

L&C admits that most lenders will not deal with people who have recent defaults and County Court Judgements but points out that the situation is never black and white.

It is possible that some lenders will be more lenient than others and the broker claims that many people with only minor blemishes may be surprised by the kind of deals available to them.

“All too often, people assume that because they’ve had some credit problems in the past, they will have to pay a much higher interest rate and in some cases, high broker fees,” said James Cotton, mortgage specialist at L&C.

“In fact, our research shows that by getting whole of market advice from L&C, borrowers can seek out the best deal for their circumstances and can often secure a better rate than they thought possible.”

The news will be welcomed by first-time buyers, many of whom are of the belief that they will have to wait years until they can get a mortgage.
